One day, two of Bulgaria's most breathtaking places. Ride the cable car up to the Seven Rila Lakes — a cirque of glacial lakes shimmering between 2,100 and 2,500 metres above sea level, each with a name that fits its shape: the Eye, the Teardrop, the Kidney. Then descend to the Rila Monastery — a UNESCO-listed sanctuary of frescoes, faith, and Bulgarian identity, tucked into the forested folds of the mountains below. 🏔️ The Seven Rila Lakes

A cable car ride brings you up to one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in the Balkans — a cirque of seven glacial lakes scattered between 2,100 and 2,500 metres above sea level. Each has a name drawn from its shape: Okoto (the Eye), Salzata (the Teardrop), Babreka (the Kidney). The trail between them winds through boulder fields, alpine meadows, and ridgelines with views that stretch for miles. On clear days, the water mirrors the sky with an intensity that stops you mid-step.

⛪ Rila Monastery — Same Day

After the hike, you descend to the Rila Monastery — the most important spiritual and cultural monument in Bulgaria, founded in the 10th century and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your guide leads you through the inner courtyard, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary with its vivid frescoes, and the museum housing Rafail's Cross — a tiny wooden masterpiece carved with over 600 biblical scenes by a monk who lost his eyesight completing it.

🚐 One Day, Zero Planning

Depart at 07:00 from central Sofia in a modern, air-conditioned minivan. Your English-speaking guide handles the logistics, the stories, and the timing — cable car, monastery, and the drive back — so you can focus entirely on what you came to see. Multiple pick-up points available across the city. Return to Sofia at approximately 19:30.

Do I need hiking experience?
The hike is moderate — suitable for active people with reasonable fitness. There are some steep inclines and uneven terrain. Hiking boots are mandatory. Not recommended for those with back problems, heart conditions, or pregnant travellers.
What if the cable car is not operating?
If the chairlift stops due to weather or technical issues, your guide will offer an alternative hike on the spot. This does not entitle you to a refund.
Is food available on the route?
There are two mountain huts on the way where basic food is available (bean soup, meatballs, tea). However, the programme is tight — we strongly recommend bringing a packed lunch from Sofia.

Yes — the museum visit is optional and the entry ticket is paid separately on site. A guided museum visit can be arranged — ask your guide on the day.
